Welcome to the Severn Valley Railway Volunteer Liaison Office

Volunteering for young people

Young people can get involved in the Railway from the age of 11, under the guidance of our experienced youth leaders. Activities are tailored to the needs of 2 age groups:

11-13 years

The SVR Apprentices (Junior Club) was set up to enable any youngster aged 11 to 13 inclusive who is interested in railways to apply to join us in various activities. We are currently operating with a single group of 13-year-olds as we re-establish the Junior Club after the two-year hiatus following Covid.

It is likely that we will take on a further group of 13-year-olds later in the year. We are limited to 8 to allow us to work safely and also so we are able to place the 14-year-olds in the limited places available for senior apprentices.

We currently have a waiting list for the next intake, so new applications can only be accepted for those who will be 13 years old by September 2023 (and no older). If you are interested, please contact the VLO to arrange an interview, accompanied by a parent or guardian, to consider your application. Any information given will be totally confidential to the Volunteer Liaison Office.

14-16 years

All 14- up to 16 year olds volunteering on the Severn Valley Railway have to be mentored on a 1:1 basis as part of our safeguarding policy. Numbers of mentors are limited so this limits the number of places available for this age group, especially as the range of duties allowed for this age range is restricted by legislation.

We currently have no vacancies available in this group.
