Welcome to the Severn Valley Railway Volunteer Liaison Office

Health and Safety

Despite being a Heritage Railway, the SVR is still a train operating company and, as with the main network is classed as a hazardous environment, and our Rules and Regulations regarding Health and Safety reflect this.

The Railway is responsible for ensuring, as far as is reasonably possible, the health, safety and welfare of its staff, visitors and neighbours. Every member of staff has two particular responsibilities:

  • To ensure that their actions do not endanger anyone else and to be responsible for their own safety.
  • To co-operate with the Railway's policies for providing and maintaining a safe place of work.

The SVR has a Safety Committee which includes the General Manager, directors of the Holdings and Guarantee Companies and staff representatives from both paid and volunteer staff.

Certain tasks on the railway require attendance at training courses before the volunteers undertake them and those concerned with operating the railway will be required to undertake a medical examination by the company's Medical Officer.
